GCK 4.0 Under Mac OS 10.13 (High Sierra)

We have recently received reports from some users about problems running GCK 4.0 after updating their operating system. We wanted to post a note about the details under this latest Mac OS update…

Mac OS 10.13 – High Sierra

Sometimes, upgrading from earlier releases of Mac OS (ex. 10.11, 10.12) to High Sierra have resulted in the GCK Preferences (and GCK License file) to be removed, or become corrupt. The result is that the application will lose the reference to the required GCK Preference folder (and your official license / serial number), and may only run in Demo mode. Attempts to enter the activation code for a license using the “License Info” panel, return a result that the code is invalid (when in fact it is not).

The typical workaround is to remove the bad GCK Preferences folder, and have GCK 4.0 recreate these files at the next launch. Then re-activation using the activation code can proceed as normal. To try this workaround, first close any open GCK file window, and Quit the application. Next, navigate to the below directory on your Mac (note: you will want to go to the user “Library” folder denoted below by the tilda (~), not the system Library folder). You can select the Go –> Go to Folder’ option from the Finder window, then paste in the below string:

~Library/Preferences/Textco Preferences

At that location you should find a folder titled “GCK4 Preferences” – drag the GCK4 Preferences folder to the trash, and empty. Then try relaunching GCK4 and testing the activation process.

Some users report that they still run into troubles after attempting the above. In these cases, a valid GCK Preference folder (and license file) can be copied from a backup of your system, and the program should run successfully.

We are also able to re-generate a valid GCK Preferences folder and license file for users who continue to have issues after trying the work arounds above.

RECOMMENDATIONS UNDER MAC OS

Prior to updating your Mac to High Sierra, we strongly recommend performing a complete back-up of your system. If you utilize the built-in backup utility, TimeMachine, this should not be a problem.

This will ensure you have a valid (i.e. working copy) of the GCK Preference and License files needed if your upgrade to High Sierra deletes these files, or causes them to become corrupt/non-readable.

If a full-system backup is not an option for you, please make a copy (iCloud, USB, DropBox, etc.) of the entire “Textco Preferences” folder located at the below path:

~Library/Preferences/Textco Preferences

Using this folder, you should be able to replace any/all files in the same path under High Sierra should you encounter problems.

If you’ve tried the above tips, and are still running into problems – please contact us at support@textco.com and include your GCK 4.0 serial number for reference. We are happy to try and help.
